BLOG FOR WEEK ENDING JUNE 21ST

On Monday, we submitted our quarterly newsletter Northsider 27.2 to the printers. On Tuesday, my staff attended both the Saint Vincent de Paul pre-budget briefing and an information session by Threshold on the changes to the Residential Tenancies Act, following the signing in to law of legislation.  Some changes, such as the new notice periods, came into effect from the 4th of June and others relating to student accommodation, for example will be operational for mid-July.  Threshold run a free, independent, free phone number for advice and it can be reached on 1800 454 454.  With the recent passing of the Bill and improvements for tenants, please ensure to check your rights with Threshold or online, especially if your landlord notifies you of rent increases or issues you with a notice of termination.

On Wednesday morning, I asked the Minister for Finance about the moves towards a eurozone budget, following last Thursday’s meeting of Finance Ministers.  I attended #Budget2020 drop-in briefings by the Irish National Teachers Organisation, the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and Fáilte Ireland.  I will be studying all the pre-budget submissions closely and will work to include the most critical demands of student and teachers in my own pre-budget submission also.  I attended the meeting of the Budgetary Oversight Committee in the afternoon and questioned members of NERI, IBEC and the Construction Federation of Ireland and Social Justice Ireland on important proposals for Budget 2020.

On Thursday morning I asked the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform about the voted expenditure of departments.  I also spoke on the new Climate Action Plan and strongly indicated that the transition to an Zero Carbon society and economy had to be fair and just for all citizens, especially lower income and vulnerable households who often endure fuel poverty and other lack of essential household supports and comforts.  I attended the Children’s Rights Alliance #NoChild2020 briefing in Buswells Hotel and re-iterated my support for such an important campaign. Earlier today (Fri.) I inspected some of the enhancement works being carried out on the Howth pathways and I am working on a submission on a major planning development in Clontarf.
