24 Sep 2009

Local Labour Deputy for Dublin North East Tommy Broughan T.D. has learnt from Justice Minister Dermot Ahern that there are just 26 Community Gardai stationed at Coolock, Raheny and Howth Garda Stations across Dublin North East.

Deputy Broughan recently asked Justice Minister Dermot Ahern to fully report on the number of Gardai (including Community Gardai) attached to Coolock, Raheny and Howth Garda Stations.

Justice Minister Ahern has now confirmed to Deputy Broughan in a Parliamentary Question that at Coolock there are 115 Gardai which includes 14 Community Gardai, at Raheny there are 73 Gardai which includes 8 Community Gardai and in Howth there are 42 Gardai including just 4 Community Gardai.

"I am aware that every Garda has a Coummunity Garda role but it is disappointing that there are not more Community Gardai as such in operation at these three key Garda Stations across Dublin North East" said Deputy Broughan." "I know of numerous constituents and their families who are under severe and unbearable pressure because of appalling and criminal anti-social activity in the local area", continued Deputy Broughan. "Many citizens are crying out for the Fianna Fail/Green government to facilitate the deployment of more Community Gardai on the streets to tackle the scourge of anti-social behaviour."

Deputy Broughan intends to raise this matter with Justice Minister Ahern and Taoiseach Cowen when the full Dail resumes later this week.
