JUSTICE MINISTER REPORTS TO BROUGHAN ON COOLOCK DRUG SEIZURES
29 Sep 2009

ustice Minister Dermot Ahern has reported to local Labour T.D. Tommy Broughan on drug seizures to the value of €82,977.85 by Gardai based at Coolock Gardai Station so far this year in 2009.

Deputy Broughan asked Minister Ahern in a Parliamentary Question (see attached) to outline the dates, quantities and locations of drug by Gardai based at Coolock Garda Station from January 1st 2009 to date in September 2009.

Deputy Broughan has now learnt from the Justice Minister that 337.164 grams of heroin (worth € 50,574.60); 336.125 grams of cocaine (worth € 23,528.75); 7.992 grams of cannabis (worth € 95.90); 1459.763 grams of cannabis resin (worth € 8,758.60) and 4 BZP tablets worth €20 were seized by Gardai at Coolock since January 1st.

However, according to Minister Ahern the amounts reported do not include cases on hand or those where seized items have not yet been submitted to the laboratory and may not include drugs submitted by specialist units such as the Garda National Drugs Unit or National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Deputy Broughan has commended Superintendent Mark Curran and all of his staff at Coolock Garda Station for their continuing vigilance in targeting the scourge of drug trafficking. Deputy Broughan has also urged Minister Ahern and his Fianna Fail/Green government colleagues to urgently provide all necessary additional resources to Gardai at Coolock, Raheny and Howth Garda Stations to ensure the maintenance and expansion of critical anti-drugs initiatives.

DÁIL QUESTION addressed to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. Ahern)

by Deputy Thomas P. Broughan

for WRITTEN on Thursday, 24th September, 2009.

* To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the dates, quantities and location of drug seizures in Coolock, Dublin 5 and 17 between 1 January and 20 September 2009; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

- Thomas P. Broughan

REPLY.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that to search each individual case for seizure date, location and quantity is not possible without a disproportionate expenditure of Garda time and resources.

Therefore the attached table reflects drugs cases received at the Forensic Science Laboratory from Coolock Garda Station between January 1 and September 20 2009.

I am advised that the table does not include cases on hand or those where seized items have not yet been submitted to the laboratory and may not include drugs submitted by specialist units such as the Garda National Drugs Unit or National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
