NEW GOVERNMENT’S HOUSING POLICY DISASTER – DAIL ADJOURNMENT DEBATE

A few weeks ago I attempted to adjourn the Dail to discuss the closure and suspension of the Dublin City Council Affordable Housing Panel and to give the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government an opportunity to explain to the House how he intended to reduce the huge waiting lists for affordable and social housing in Dublin City and the three other Dublin Counties.

NOMINATION OF NEW COMPTROLLER & AUDITOR GENERAL – DAIL SPEECH

It is a great pleasure for me to mark the appointment of a new Comptroller and Auditor General, Mr. John Buckley, and to wish him well with the administration of the national audit office and with the discharge of the key constitutional office that is the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General. I was honoured to be reappointed to the Committee of Public Accounts for the 30th DÃ¡il following my service to the Committee of Public Accounts of the 27th DÃ¡il. During my first period of service on the committee, Mr. John Purcell was appointed Comptroller and Auditor General. In the intervening 14 years, he has discharged the duties of this crucial office with great distinction and thorough professionalism. As I remarked last week at his last appearance with his audit team in front of the committee, he has been a role model for excellence in the public service.

Twenty-eight Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2008

Deputy Thomas P. Broughan: The Lisbon reform treaty is a significant legal document, although some of its proponents have erroneously tried to dismiss its importance or its impact on Irish society if it is accepted by the Irish people and adopted into law. For this reason, I welcome that the Irish people have the right to exercise their democratic right to vote on this treaty. It is extremely regrettable that none of our fellow citizens in any other EU member states will have the chance to do this.

YOUTH & COMMUNITY RESOURCES CENTRE FOR KILBARRACK FOXFIELD ST. JOHN PARISH – DAIL DEBATE

Deputy Thomas P. Broughan: Kilbarrack Foxfield St. John Parish is one of two parishes of the historic district of Kilbarrack in the centre of my constituency. Twenty five years ago then President Erskine Childers laid the foundation stone for the Kilbarrack Foxfield community centre on Greendale Road and a number of very committed local groups amalgamated to form the Kilbarrack and District Community Association, KADCA, to successfully run the centre in the intervening quarter of a century.
