BROUGHAN RAISES ISSUE OF TAX LIABILITY FOR OLDER PEOPLE WITH FINANCE MINISTER
Dublin North East Deputy Tommy Broughan has raised the recent issuing of letters to senior citizens in relation to potential changes to their tax liability with Finance Minister Michael Noonan.
Deputy Broughan said, “Last week a number of senior citizens contacted me who had received these letters from the Revenue Commissioners even though they are fully tax compliant. Many of the seniors were very upset to receive correspondence from the Revenue in this manner given that they were receiving the €230 State Pension as well as an extremely meagre non-state pension.
“It is extremely regrettable that there was not greater communication between Revenue and the relevant departments about citizens who were clearly well under the threshold for paying tax on their pensions.
“I immediately contacted Minister Noonan’s office about this offer and welcomed the opening of Revenue helplines over the weekend to assist senior citizens who may be anxious about their current tax liability.
“I understand that the Chairperson of the Revenue Commission will be before the Oireachtas Finance Committee this week to explain the manner in which the current campaign by Revenue was carried out and I also hope to raise this matter in Dail Eireann myself over coming days.”
