DÁIL PQ WITH THE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON KURDISTAN

34.Deputy Thomas P. Broughan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he will report to Dáil Éireann on the situation in Kurdistan; the steps Ireland is taking to ensure that the national integrity of Kurdistan is supported by the EU and international community; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Deputy Thomas P. Broughan: I ask the Minister for a brief update on any supportive actions Ireland has taken relating to the Kurdish nation which is located within the Turkish, State, Syria, Iraq and Iran. His predecessor, the Minister, Deputy Charles Flanagan, told me last year that the conflict resolution unit in the Department was attempting to assist the Kurdish people in Turkey and I wondered if that was ongoing or if anything has happened at the Foreign Affairs Council.

DÁIL QUESTIONS WITH MINISTER FLANAGAN ON ALEPPO

I listened to the Minister’s earlier replies to colleagues in the Chamber on the carnage in Syria which has taken perhaps 500,000 lives at this stage and which has displaced millions of Syrian people. The Minister said he had been in contact with ambassadors and others. He said Ireland was ready to play a positive role, and I think he meant a very strongly positive role, in the resolution of the conflict and the bringing about of an immediate and final ceasefire. Has the Minister been involved with the International Syria Support Group and has he organised any meetings with the Syrian Foreign Minister, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, and with the representatives of the other non-Syrian forces which are combatants in that country?

BROUGHAN CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO TAKE MORE PROACTIVE ROLE IN ALEPPO AND SYRIA

Today in Dáil Éireann, during Oral Questions with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, Deputy Tommy Broughan called on the Government to take a more proactive role in finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Syria. The conflict in Syria is now in its sixth year and hundreds of thousands of people have died during the course of the civil war and countless others displaced. Most recently, the eastern part of the ancient city, Aleppo, has been, and is continuing to be, decimated with airstrikes.
